Ciputra - A “Beverley Hill” in Hanoi

We took a long bus journey, even got lost some time, to come to Ciputra at 2pm. It was a rainy day in Thanh Xuan but seemed quite dry in the North of Hanoi where Ciputra was located: Not rainy, not sunny, not too hot … but windy and so nice that day was.

The first impression is that Ciputra is so large – 5 square kilometer area. And it was impossible to walk to every corner of Ciputra, then we just discovered a part of it which is near the UNIS School, to the Southeastern of Ciputra.

Nice and polite guards. Clean and quiet streets. Luxurious villas and restaurants. Almost people are foreigners. Fast-moving lifestyle. Neighbors have little interaction with each other and stay a personal/individual life in a beautiful house, with comfortable material services, deluxe habits, costly needs and supplies, noble sports, posh cars, etc. In general, it is a far different world in comparison with the one outside the huge gate! The living standard here is not the level we often see on TV or any other telecommunication channel. Noble things are for noble persons, of course.

I think I can understand why Ciputra is so far from the centre of Hanoi. Not to mention that it is too large, that there may be no place for such a big one or that land is so expensive in the central Hanoi, imagine that it is located near Hoan Kiem Lake or so, it would be isolated too. Tina said it was similar to her campus in LA to some extent, Peter said it was a picture of Beverly Hill, I said it was not Vietnamese culture. Ciputra is far different from the central Hanoi, in architecture, living standards, material conditions as well as lifestyle and culture. Privatization and individualism are so clearly seen here. We walked along many corners and roads, finding only restaurant, supermarket, schools, villas, blocs and blocs. Outsiders are not often allowed to get into Ciputra. We have to pretend that we are residents here. Thank God, we have Tina and Peter – foreigners, to make they trust us. That’s how we were able to be there taking pictures!! The most funny thing is that the only one we can talk to is the guards, not residents, not students, or any else. We have to buy something from them then ask them questions; otherwise there is no one who has time for us. There are almost only cars on the road when we got there. How can you find a shoe shine boy there? A knight-sharpen man? A key-maker? A cup of Bia hoi? No way. Even a glass of fruit juice is priced in dollar!

It is such a foreign part inside the border of Hanoi and Vietnam, a stranger who was welcomed here by foreign investors and by domestic billionaires and a stranger in our culture absolutely!

If I had enough money to live here, it would be great! But honestly, I don’t like living here much due to its quietness and isolation from the other sides of Hanoi. I love interacting with people, esp my neighbors, and love to have a friendly lifestyle among a community where we share our feelings and culture.

Anyway, it was a lovely adventure to Ciputra with my teammates. I love to walk around in such a nice day, on a beautiful roads and experience a different corner of Hanoi, with such funny and lovely Peter, Tina (10-o’clock rose^^), and Yen. You guys are so awesome! Love you all!

Mango's map

12.50pm: Sunny Sunday, cool wind blew, lovely Sword Lake view and...I'm comminggggggg!!!!!
12.51pm: Calling...01282328781...Peter, plz get it...no answer!
12.53pm: Calling again...tut ...tut...tut...Peter: "Hello...oh, yes, we'll be there in 3 mins...bye" - YEAH!
1.00pm: Rose, Tina, Peter were chit chatting while waiting for Yen...
1.20pm: Finally Yen came. Ok, let's go MANGO!!!!!!:x:x:x Straight forward to Hang Dao - Hang Ngang - Hang Giay - Quan Thanh...and here we are - Hang Bun:x

Start mapping now!!!!Hang Bun is straight like this, and Nguyen Khac Nhu cross like that...
Hang Bun:
Bia hoi Viet Phap  3k/glass
Tra da 2k/glass
A Vinataba cigarette 1k/cig
There's a big tree to sit under and enjoy a glass of Tra da, some candies, or cigarette - so peaceful and romantic, esp in Autumn Hanoi:x
Alo Cafe - 63B Hang Bun - Nice fruit juices - 38k/one - wildlike and secret style - Oh, I love to pose pics:x:x:x
Extra tatoo shop (400k/small tatoo) and Nem Phung (mum mum)- Love to!
80B Quan Thanh - Phone card (96k for 100k card...uhmm)
Then go "cooking oil" and "nuoc mam", and "rice", "vegetable", "pork meat", ...everything needed to cook a meal, here in Hoe Nhai street - an open market metting whole day, esp crowd in the morning!
...
Finally we got this:

And found out that:
Peter is such a particular, careful person and he can be a city planning professional...oh ohh...so funny and lovely, too!!!!!!
Tina is sweet, smart and potential to be a Photographer!
I realize surprisingly that Yen is so good at drawing pretty things for me to fill color, haha. We are such a perfect couple in this term:x

And then chose "che xoai" on Hang Than street...so NICE, tasty and "bui bam" :P
Walking around those street is so interesting and exciting because you are so easy to get lost here, this road crosses that road but doesn't meet the other one, ... There are a lot of trees here, which make it so cool to walk under the trees and to talk to the local people - so friendly and funny, so helpful and kind...

A little bit tired and so sleepy to walk and go mapping in the early afternoon without taking a short nap before, but it was a fantastic experience here with my dear buddies - explore and laugh together, nearly get lost together, too. :)) Teamwork and friendship:X

For the last point, Answering questions from Gerard is inevitable :))

- What was your experience of the space?
This place has everything. It's near the Hoe Nhai market and near the center of Hanoi so you can find anything. The local people are nice, helpful and friendly. And there is a lot of things to enjoy here:x

-  How did it make you feel?
I had such a good time going mapping the streets with my teammates, learning from them and laughing with them. I can't keep smiling and having fun when working with them, it's so cool!!!!! We are going to understand more about each other and be closer to each other, going to be a strong team. I'm in love with Mango now, oh my!!!!

- Why do you like/ dislike this place?
I love this place because it makes me feel so peaceful to live in, pretty quiet and romantic as well. But it seems peaceful scenes often make people familiar with quietness and something deep in our soul. If I have a choice, I'd rather come here to walk and visit when I need time to refresh and relax after work. More often, I like a more active, dynamic environment to live in where I can meet people, strive for my dreams and try my best to have a dynamic lifestyle with fun and challenges as well.

There is a job like that!

Prisoner! Who knows that it's also a Job??? I did, and  ever was surprised!
Convicted of armed robbery, Carl was sent to jail and got a new job rather than the previous one at a convenience store - a PRISONER!!!

Why? Just because prison is a society with its own citizens, cultures and jobs. In prison, Carl is a cook. And he loves it. Working as a cook in jail helps him make most of his meals, passes the time, keeps him out of trouble, away from a lot of "fucking people" here. His in-jail society includes all kinds of people: gang bangers, black or white, crazy or caring, behaving like animals or gentle,... Carl has to fight, a lot of times, to live a life here. Everybody has to fight for his life in our world, so does Carl. He is living and doing a job!!!

Carl gets his own dreams, too. He dreams about his wife and kids all the time, dreams about being with his family and never wants to wake up to see himself in jail again.

Carl committed a robbery with a wish to change his life, to give his family, his wife and kids, a better life in a society. Then he was sent to another society as a punishment - jail. And right in this new society, he thinks about good things, and dreams nice dreams. There is a contradiction here! In a "Good society" (as we all suppose ours), Carl is a robber - a bad man, while in the "Society of bad men" (Jail), Carl is a humane person. I just wonder whether our concept of Good society is troubling and whether our society is really a good one or conversely...

I like this entry in Gig cuz it sent me a different message from other ones. People only say about their job, proud or not, convenient or uncomfortable, strict or easy boss, high or low salary, money and money... Carl talks about his job but it seems that he is talking about the society he is in and the regretful life of him. People work for salary, he works to avoid trouble, avoid fighting with other prisoners and to keep him away from evil - He works to live a simple life just to wait for release!

I saw Carl and saw another America. The interview - Carl's story - reveals the back side of a shining, luxurious and proud America but also reveals the good side of a prisoner!!! That's invaluable values ever! A job can help a person to go back to his innocent soul!

It is such a job, yes, a Prisoner!

Life story of a Rose

It's a red rose, born because of love and sacrifice, with a love song and under moonlight...ever nice!

Enthusiastic, active, brave, decisive,...romantic, gentle, sensitive...

1. Name and name and nickname
Since I was born, my mom gave me a name as Hong Hai (she thought it was the sea when sun rises up). It seems like a boy name, but it did make me braver and stronger mind like boys^^ tks Mom!:xxx

Growing up gradually, I got a lot of nickname but I chose one by myself: Moon Rose (actually, a rose growing up in moonlight and by the sacrifice for love of a small bird - oh, just a fairy tale). Then my friends call me Rose or Rosie...My Tiptop group (my best friends) also call me G7^^

2. My big family
I am living with my Dad and Mom, and 2 of my sisters, one younger and one older. We actually have 7 sisters, including me in my family but 4 of them have married and dont live with us. We gather every weekend here in my house, with our nieces and nephews. How nice and lovely they are!!!! I love to stay at home on weekends because I want to share my time with my family, I dont have much time on the other days for them. And i like to have a big meal with them, too, except for the fact that I have to wash the dishes at the end. haha

My parents do not have any son, and we dont have any brother, but we are more than happy together. We take care of each other and be so sweet to others, that's all I need.  The party is getting bigger and bigger@v@

3. My TIPTOP
TIPTOP is my dearest group of friends, with 5 girls, 5 sets of personal characteristics  but only one love to each other. We have a lovely, sweety, caring, and smart Chibo (P.Linh), a funny, childlike, beautiful and hardworking Smiley (P.Ninh), an attractive, pretty, intelligent and optimistic Vitaly (Hang), a gentle, creative, thoughtful and nice Novembers (Huyen) and me. I love them so much!!!!:XXX

4. Friends
I always keep my arm free to welcome friends, I love making friends and exploring their inside values (soul's beauty) and I got a lot of wonderful ones. I got my IS07, esp my 2Q07, and my family at FIS with brothers and sisters, my 12H, 9A6,  Duc, Tram, Huong, Chi, Ha, ....

And I got sweety friends from UCHANU, Tina and Peter, Father Gerard, Sis Moc, Yen, Cathy, Linh, Christine, Bro Giang, Jesse, Lan, Son, Thu, Thao, Thai Linh, John, ... They are all so friendly, smart, pretty & handsome, funny, lovely, critical, ... great friends!!!!
:x

5. My dreams
I try to be a good student, a sweety friend, a nice daughter and an optimistic person for myself. I dream to be a business woman with a chain of restaurants set up by myself. I love to serve my guests in my restaurants with the most wonderful dishes and services... I'm on the way to make it come true!!!!

6. My objectives to join UCHANU
Change wind, change mind! I love friends, and exchange of culture, knowledge and things. I want to expand my view on what students in another country think and believe in. I like to explore my hidden ability in another environment and understand more about America, a promise land for  my MBA. I want to know more about development in Vietnam as well as in the region cuz I learn about it everyday but not so intensified and direct. Esp, I love fun! And I would have all those things here with UCHANU folks, we would make a fairy tale come true just right here^^

I like the way we discuss together an issue like development in the last class, we can open our mind and free to create any thing we think of.

And I love to go out with my folks, Tina is so nice, pretty, and sweet. Peter is critical, particular, but funny and lovely. Yen is a great girl I know, smile all the time and so funny to talk to. I can have fun all the time with those guys without any tiredness. Tks tkssss tksss

7. Last words
Thank u all to read this note, if you can read through this note until these last sentences, u are really a friend who cares about me. And that makes me happie^^ Love you folks!!!
